Steelwork has started at our Murton converter station site, marking another key milestone for Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1).
The work began in July 2026 and is expected to continue until early 2027. Later this year, cladding and roofing works will begin. Once these are complete, mechanical and electrical equipment will be installed inside the building.
How are the buildings constructed?
Several buildings on the converter station site will be constructed using steel frames. The structural framework is assembled first, before cladding and roofing panels are added. The site covers approximately 300 metres by 200 metres- around the size of eight football pitches.
The buildings will house equipment that converts electricity from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This allows large amounts of electricity to be transported efficiently between Scotland and England.
The site will also include storage and service buildings. These will support the operation and maintenance of the converter station.
What to expect during the works
Steelworks will continue during our standard site operating hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
The works are expected to generate very little dust. Noise levels should be similar to those from other construction activities on site.
We will continue to monitor noise and dust throughout the works, and where necessary, take steps to minimise any impacts.
