Enabling works for Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) – a new two-gigawatt high voltage direct current link between East Lothian and Hawthorn Pit in County Durham – began in March 2025. The project is expected to be fully operational by 2029.

As part of these temporary enabling works, our contractor, Prysmian, will be transporting stone from a local quarry, the Kinegar Glenfin Site, to a secure compound for offshore drilling preparation. This activity is separate from the future development of the Branxton substation, which will be building and utilising a separate road access network.

From 1 September 2025, HGVs will use a short-term proposed route via the A1 and Bilsdean to reach the compound. Movements will be carefully scheduled to avoid local events and will take place periodically throughout September. Temporary traffic lights will only be in operation when required for safe vehicle passage and switched off at all other times.

To minimise impact, HGVs will exit the site directly onto the A1 northbound, reducing traffic on local roads. We are continuing to work closely with landowners to manage and minimise any disruption, and we will keep the community updated on future changes to transport movements.
