On Wednesday 15 October, METLEN Energy & Metals Community Liaison Manager Duncan Bennett represented the EGL1 team as a Business Ambassador for DurhamWorks at Dene Academy’s You’re Hired, You’re Fired event.
Inspired by the TV show The Apprentice, the event offered Year 11 students a real-world insight into recruitment and selection processes, including assessment-centre-style tasks. Working in teams, students took part in challenges designed to highlight key employability skills such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork. The activities helped pupils identify their strengths, understand areas for development, and gain practical tips for approaching future job applications.
Duncan was one of two Business Ambassadors who observed the tasks, acted as a judge and provided constructive feedback to each team, supporting the event’s aim of helping young people prepare for the transition from education to employment.
Reflecting on the day, Duncan said: “We’re proud to play a role in initiatives like this that empower the next generation with the skills and confidence they need to succeed, and we look forward to supporting similar events in the future.”
DurhamWorks is a programme that provides careers information, advice and guidance to young people across local communities, helping them build confidence, develop skills and take steps towards employment, training or further education.
This activity forms part of EGL1’s wider commitment to supporting local schools and community initiatives in the areas where we work.
