April - December 2025

BeachAs part of Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1)’s commitment to being a good neighbour and protecting the environment around the Murton Converter Station and marine cable landfall area, team members from contractor METLEN Energy & Metals have been working closely with Durham Wildlife Trust to support a series of coastal litter picks along the County Durham coastline.

The partnership began in late April with a litter pick at Seaham Hall Beach and continued every month through to December. In total METLEN have been involved in 15 litter picks across locations such as Seaham Hall Beach, Red Acre Beach, Horden Beach, Crimdon Beach, and Blackhall Beach, all close to the planned landfall site for the EGL1 marine cable, making their protection and upkeep particularly important to the project.

By removing litter that can harm wildlife and detract from the natural beauty of the coastline, METLEN’s ongoing work with Durham Wildlife Trust demonstrates a shared commitment to environmental stewardship. These activities form part of EGL1’s wider support for local communities, schools and environmental initiatives in the areas where the project is taking place.

Further litter picks are planned in the months ahead, as EGL1 and its contractors continue to play an active role in caring for County Durham’s coastline for the benefit of both people and the environment.
